A Maryland man turned a frustrating roadway encounter into a $500,000 lottery win by using the license plate numbers of a driver who cut him off on the highway.

The Anne Arundel County resident was returning home from an out-of-town trip when another vehicle nearly caused an accident. Instead of staying angry, he memorized the offending car's license plate numbers and used them to purchase lottery tickets later that day.

At Doc's F&B Liquors in Glen Burnie, the man bought 10 identical "Pick 5" tickets, playing the memorized license plate numbers straight for $1 each. "I figure if you're going to play, you should play big," he told lottery officials.

The next morning, he scanned the tickets using the Lottery app and discovered his $500,000 win. He immediately shared the good news with his mother.

The lucky winner plans to use his windfall wisely, splitting it between paying off existing bills and making investments for the future. The selling store, Doc's F&B Liquors, will receive a $5,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.

"When driving on the highway, you're supposed to obey the rules of the road and be courteous toward other drivers. However, that doesn't always happen," noted the Maryland Lottery statement. In this case, one driver's discourtesy led to another's unexpected fortune.
