Wynn NYC Casino Opposition Group Reaches Critical 5,000-Member Milestone
A community opposition group against the proposed Wynn NYC casino has gathered over 5,000 supporters in just five months. The group, "Protect the High Line," aims to preserve the iconic elevated park's character and views on Manhattan's West Side.
The $12 billion Western Rail Yards development project, which includes Wynn New York as its centerpiece, faces significant resistance from local residents. The project requires one of three available downstate casino licenses to proceed.

Key concerns from opponents include:
- Proposed towers blocking High Line views
- Reduction in planned housing units from 3,454-5,700 (2009 agreement) to just 1,500 units
- Lack of community input in development plans
Alan van Capelle, executive director of Friends of the High Line, emphasized that supporters come from across New York City, not just the immediate area. Recent polling shows most West Side residents oppose a casino in their neighborhood.
The project does have some supporters, particularly:
- Groups focused on homeless assistance, citing potential revenue generation
- Labor organizations anticipating job creation opportunities
Related Cos., the developer, has indicated that without the casino component, the Western Rail Yards development is unlikely to proceed.
The group continues to advocate for development that honors the 2009 rezoning agreement while preserving the park's integrity and prioritizing public benefit, including affordable housing commitments.
