After signing a five-year, $25 million contract extension with the Golden Knights in 2020, Lehner's career took an unexpected turn. Previously known for his openness about battling bipolar disorder, PTSD, and addiction - for which he received the NHL's Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2019 - Lehner now faces significant financial challenges.
In 2022, Lehner and his wife filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Court documents reveal they owe creditors approximately $27.5 million. The Aliya Growth Fund, a creditor owed $4.8 million, successfully obtained a federal court injunction to freeze Lehner's assets amid concerns about money transfers to shell companies in Dubai.
Court filings allege that the couple spent around $1.5 million on vacations, gambling, and luxury items in 2022 after their bankruptcy filing. Responding to these claims in a recent Review-Journal interview, Lehner stated, "I don't need sympathy or anything; screw that. Bring up something that's true and I can take it like a man. But everything is fake."
The NHL Players' Association and NHL have agreed that Lehner's salary won't count against the Vegas Golden Knights' salary cap. While Lehner's future in professional hockey remains uncertain, he maintains that the public doesn't have the full picture of his family's situation and suggests more details will emerge in the future.
