Long Island Casino Public Hearing Set for December 9 at Nassau County Legislature
Nassau County will hold a public meeting on December 9 to discuss Las Vegas Sands' proposed casino development at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. This follows the company's submission of an 800-page draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) to the legislature in November.

The meeting and environmental review are crucial steps after a New York State Supreme Court ruling found that the initial coliseum lease transfer agreement violated state laws. The environmental review comment period extends through January 6, with New York regulators expected to award three downstate casino licenses late next year.
The proposed project faces mixed reactions, with opposition from Hofstra University and local community groups, while garnering support from politicians and labor leaders. According to Sands' estimates, the casino would generate:
- $563 million in annual taxes ($440 million for schools and MTA)
- 7,000 construction jobs
- 13,000 permanent positions
Environmental considerations include:
- Daily water usage: 110,000 gallons plus 14,613 gallons for irrigation
- New well design and testing for Phase 2 construction
- Sustainability initiatives including:
- Renewable energy implementation
- Carbon mitigation strategies
- Photovoltaic panels on parking garages and buildings
- Energy-efficient cooling systems
Sands' integrated resort concept aims to combine leisure, business, and entertainment facilities to serve both local community needs and tourist demands. The project's environmental and economic impact will be key factors in the final license decision.
