Porter, who played for the Toronto Raptors, pleaded guilty in July to conspiracy to commit wire fraud after admitting to manipulating two NBA games for gambling purposes. The incidents occurred on January 26 and March 20, 2024, where Porter deliberately left games early citing illness or injury, ensuring under bets would win when he scored no points and played less than five minutes.

In April 2024, the NBA imposed a lifetime ban on Porter, marking the first such ban since the legalization of sports gambling in the United States.

Legal expert Peter Czegledy told the Canadian Press that Porter likely faces significant prison time and fines, despite his cooperation with authorities. The severity is expected due to the premeditated nature of the misconduct and Porter's public position. While his defense has cited gambling addiction as a mitigating factor, the court is expected to impose both imprisonment and substantial financial penalties.
