NBA referees are facing increased abuse and threats from sports bettors, particularly through social media channels. The National Basketball Referees Association (NBRA), which represents officials in the NBA, WNBA, and G League, reports growing instances of harassment both on and off the court as legal sports betting expands across the US.

The issue came to light when the NBRA shared a threatening message sent to an NBA official's wife on social media. This revelation follows Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr's recent outburst about officiating after a one-point loss to the Houston Rockets.

The NBRA emphasized that such abuse has become increasingly common, with officials and their families receiving "despicable messages" regularly. They've called for an end to this behavior, stating that "referees and their families are human beings."

While sports betting abuse typically targets players and coaches, referees are now experiencing similar harassment. The issue has gained attention as sports betting becomes legal in more states, with Missouri recently becoming the 39th state to authorize it.

The NBRA has urged players and coaches to be mindful of their public statements, noting that aggressive rhetoric can encourage further abuse. They've also called for greater protection measures from lawmakers, gaming regulators, and sportsbooks to address online harassment.

The NBA's Last Two Minute Report confirmed that the controversial call that sparked Kerr's criticism was correct, highlighting the disconnect between emotional reactions and official reviews.
