The new offerings cover two CFP semifinal games this week and the championship game on January 20 in Atlanta. NFL playoff coverage includes AFC and NFC conference championship games scheduled for January 26.
Event contracts differ from traditional sports betting in several key ways:
- They function as financial derivatives
- Traders speculate on "Yes" or "No" outcomes
- Prices fluctuate based on projected outcomes
- Contracts pay out only if the position matches the correct outcome
Crypto.com's platform offers unique features:
- First platform allowing event contract purchases using cryptocurrencies
- Supports approximately 350 digital currencies
- Payouts are made in US dollars
- Regulated by the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)
The rising popularity of event contracts stems from their similarity to traditional derivatives, offering extended engagement periods and potential profits. Unlike traditional sports bets that settle immediately after games, event contract values can fluctuate daily, providing multiple trading opportunities.
Major financial services firms, including Interactive Brokers and Robinhood, are also entering the event contracts market, particularly focusing on sports betting opportunities. This expansion follows successful implementations by platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket during the 2024 presidential election season.
